Frank startled at a loud knock on the HQ door, nearly spilling his apple cider on the map he studied on the kitchen counter. He wiped up the cider with his sleeve, snarling at his own clumsiness, then took a deep breath before going to open the door.

“Amber?” he asked, cocking his head. “The status checks aren’t for another hour.”

“It’s not that.” The look on her face was anything but happy.

Frank stepped aside so she could come in and then closed the door behind her. “Okay…”

“We just got in another batch of refugees—”

“I thought Joe was handling all of that.”

“You don’t understand. These refugees aren’t from Ephrata. They’re from Lititz.”

Frank furrowed his brow. “You mean…”

“The city has fallen.”

“Fallen?”

Amber nodded. “That SoCan army we’ve been expecting rolled right over them. Lititz fought hard, of course, but they’re a small town. The best they could do was hold off the attackers long enough for many of the civilians to escape.”

Frank’s jaw dropped. He had known it was a possibility, since Lititz lay between SoCan and Clanholme and was a highly militarized town. It would’ve been easier to just leave some forces behind to besiege them, keeping Lititz forces bottled up instead of crushing them immediately.

Then he remembered that Lititz was weakened from their attempt to ravage NorCan’s supply lines. Obviously, SoCan’s military scouts had done their job well.

He said, “Take whatever soldiers came in with the other Lititz refugees, and send their civilians to Liz Town. They’ll just be in the way here, and we expect the attack at any moment. The last thing they need is to get caught in one siege after escaping another.”
